Sifu won’t have difficult options at launch

Though it doesn’t necessarily have to be described as a roguelike-like martial arts action game Sifu do not play quite similar to one. Like games such as Hades and Profit, a game over means going back to the original and losing any abilities unlocked during the process. Amid complicated battles and harsh death penalties, some curious players might be hoping for difficulty options where they can seek out their own, slightly more casual, experience. overcome. But this won’t happen, at least not at launch.

Pierre Tano, executive producer at French studio Sloclap, is developing and publishing Sifu for PlayStation and PC platforms, recently spoke with MP1st about the game. When asked about the game’s difficulty, Tano said it’s entirely possible for players to get through the entire game without dying once, but that will require them to master the combat system.

Again, in Sifu, death is not the end immediately. Upon death, the player’s character is resurrected on the spot, but they will age. Each death increases how many years the player’s age is. And while increasing age means increased strength, the player’s health decreases with each respawn. Once a player passes a certain age, they die permanently and need to start over.

Tano explains how Slotlap wants to challenge and motivate players with Sifufight. The aim is to encourage players to learn, improve and adapt, with the immediate resurrection gimmick working as a way to help new players as it allows them to fail at least a few times. . But since the cost of defeat will increase with each death, players will eventually need to learn profound knowledge of the combat system if they want to complete the game.

The lack of any difficulty options may render some players unplayable Sifu, but Tano doesn’t completely rule out the addition of alternative difficulty options in the future. It wouldn’t be entirely unprecedented; when Profit never received different difficulty options, it was criticized for its save feature, as it failed to save midway. Developer Housemarque will eventually update the game to allow players to allow exactly that, meaning it’s now possible to try running in multiple sessions.

Difficulty in video games remains a hotly discussed topic, as some believe that every game should offer difficulty options to allow more people to play them. In the case of something like Dark souls, as many people argue that brutal difficulty is the key point, and whether or not difficulty options are implemented is entirely up to the developers.

Sifu released for PC, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 on February 8, 2022.
