Positive case study shows downloadable video may be coming to YouTube PWA

ChromeUnboxed reports that Google is quite excited about the feature, according to a case study the company has published.

In the case of research Google writes:

Watching videos offline on laptops and hybrid devices is one of the top requested features from YouTube Premium users, and the YouTube team has received great feedback about the offline experience. With the new PWA, YouTube Premium users have seamless access to the content they love – even while they’re on the go. Users can download the latest videos from their favorite creators to watch on their Chromebooks on planes, in coffee shops, or anywhere they might not have a stable Internet connection.

And now, PWAs are fast becoming Chromebook users’ primary destination for YouTube content.

The Video Download feature test ends on December 10, but Google introduced it in a case study that suggests it could end forever.

The PWA is already quite powerful, with support for voice search, keyboard shortcuts, declarative link capture, web sharing, and many more features.

However, it is the offline features that differentiate a website from an app, with Google recently saying:

We plan to enhance the offline capabilities checker. PWAs that do not provide at least a basic offline experience will not display an installation prompt.

Hopefully Google will stay true to this claim and provide true offline capabilities for their PWA (on both ChromeOS and Windows). Positive case study shows downloadable video may be coming to YouTube PWA
